Is Mauricio Pochettino the Right Choice for USMNT Head Coach? Tactics, Style, and the High-Stakes Decision by US Soccer
Following Gregg Berhalter's dismissal, U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker made his priorities clear.
“I just want to hire the best coach possible,” Crocker stated after the
coaching change prompted by the Copa America disappointment. “Whether
they’re from the U.S. or elsewhere, they need to fit the profile—a serial
winning coach who can continue to develop this promising group of players.”
It seems Matt Crocker has delivered on his promise. According to multiple
reports, including Miami-based journalist Ivan Kasanzew, U.S. Soccer has
signed Mauricio Pochettino as its next head coach, with a contract extending
through the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kasanzew, who previously broke the news of
Pochettino’s arrival at Chelsea in April 2023, was supported by
well-connected USMNT journalist Michele Giannone, who hinted, "you can trust
Ivan here."
This appointment marks a significant move for U.S. Soccer, bringing in a
manager with considerable clout and extensive experience. While this will be
Pochettino’s first national team role, he arrives with a strong pedigree
from managing top European clubs, including leading a team to the Champions
League final and winning a major league title.
However, despite his impressive résumé, there are inherent risks with this
appointment that U.S. Soccer must acknowledge if they want to leverage
Pochettino’s strengths while navigating his potential shortcomings.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place on home soil in less than two
years, Pochettino's mission will be to lead the host nation to tangible
success, guiding what may be the most talented squad the U.S. national team
has ever assembled.
